Benjamin Victor

Benjamin Matthew Victor (January 16, 1979 in Taft, CA) is an American sculptor and Artist-in-Residence at Northern State University, South Dakota.[1] He is best known for his sculpture of Sarah Winnemucca in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. At age 26, he became the youngest artist honored to have a sculpture in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol.[2][3]

Early life

Victor was born in Taft, California. He grew up in Bakersfield, California. He lived in Las Vegas, Nevada after completing high school. He attended Northern State University.[2][4]

Career

Victor’s first work to receive attention was a life-size statue of the biblical character Samson, sculpted when the artist was a sophomore art major at Northern State University, South Dakota. The piece garnered a scholarship for Victor in recognition of his aesthetic and conceptual integrity in art from the prestigious National Sculpture Society in New York City. At 23 years old, Victor received his first large commission, the trilogy of soldier sculptures for the Aberdeen’s Regional Airport War Memorial.
